Siberian Huskies - Pictures - Historical OutlineSiberian Huskies are the descendents of sled dogs used in the Siberian Arctic by some northern tribes. Sled dogs are thought to have originated from ancient dogs of Europe and Asia. It may be that their lines contain the blood of the wolf. The life of northern people was inseparably connected with the life of sled dogs. Some rock paintings indicate that the first sled dogs were known about 4000 years ago.History has left some notes that compare sled dogs of Northern America used by Eskimos and those used in some northern parts of Russia, particularly, by the Chukchi people. Historians state that the dogs of the Chukchi people were less massive, had narrow heads, and a medium-sized coat that came in a variety of color patterns.
The Siberian Husky made way to the United States at the rise of the 20th century. At the end of the 19th century Alaska turned out to be a magnet that attracted gold-diggers from all parts of the world. The gold rush made thousands of people go to Nome, a town founded by gold-diggers. The only means to reach far-away gold mines in winter was using sled dogs. Malamutes were the most common dogs there, yet other working breeds were used too. In 1908, the Kennel Club, which was established a year earlier, organized the first sled dog race as a means of entertainment. The "All-Alaska Sweepstakes" that comprised about 408 miles (656 km), surpassed all the expectations of the organizers and became very popular. The next few years were sensational in the world of sled dog racing. A team of medium-sized dogs uncommon for Alaska finished the race as third. The dogs were brought from Siberia and were named "Siberian Huskies" (husky is the name for Eskimos and their sled dogs). However, not many believed in the future of the breed as brilliant sled dogs because of its comparatively small size and light appearance, Siberian Huskies became the leaders of similar competitions. The breed spread quickly across the United States and Canada and has confirmed the status of perfect sledding dogs. The AKC recognized the Siberian Husky in 1930. The first national breed club was formed in 1938. It was instrumental in promoting the breed and retaining its working qualities. Siberian Huskies achieved a place on the 20 most popular breeds in the chart of the AKC.
